I also offer online psychology sessions through Skype or Vsee (video call).
You might find this to be a convenient option, especially if you have a very busy life, and/or simply prefer to have therapy from the comfort of your own home. Online psychology can also be a good option if you travel for work, or if you are permanently based overseas and would like regular sessions from a UK based therapist.
Studies have found online support is as effective as the more traditional face-to-face therapy. For example, Dr. Kessler and colleagues (2009) found that CBT was effective for the treatment of depression when delivered online in real time by a therapist. They concluded that real-time online psychology offers the flexibility and responsiveness of face-to-face therapy and is appropriate for people with severe symptoms.
Some people prefer to have at least one face-to-face session (usually the Assessment session) before moving on to online support, this is no problem at all.
In preparation for online sessions please ensure you follow these steps:
- Download the video call software – this is available for iPhones as well as for computers
- Set up an account
- Connect a webcam to your computer (this is preferable, but not essential)
- Invest in a microphone so that we can both hear each other-this is worth investing in and can be found at most good computer shops
- As with face to face sessions, you will need to ensure that you are somewhere where you can speak in confidence without any disruptions.
